Calvin Courson

Mr. Calvin Dewayne Courson, age 58, of Alma, passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House in Waycross, GA following an extended illness.

Calvin was born on April 25, 1965, in Alma, GA, the fourth son of the late Claude D. and Iris Lee Courson. He graduated from Pierce County High School in 1984. Soon after graduating, he began his 33-year career with the Jones Company/Distribution South in Alma.

During his career, he served 11 years as pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Mershon from 1995-2006. Afterwards, he served as a visiting pastor for many years at local churches. Calvin was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Alma, where he served as a Deacon and Adult Sunday School teacher.

In addition to his mother and father, Calvin was predeceased by a niece, Alissa Courson, and stepfather, Melvin Carroll.

He is survived by his brothers, Billy Courson (wife Darlene) and Bobby Courson, both of Alma, and Bailey Courson (wife Wendy) of Summerville, SC; his nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly, Amy Courson and Dillon Courson, both of Alma, Samantha Taylor (husband Dustin) and Daniel Courson (wife Devon), both of Waycross, Joseph Courson (wife Heather) of Springfield, GA, Dalton Courson of Blackshear, GA, and Chandler and Connor Courson, both of Summerville, SC; several great nieces, great nephews, stepsisters, stepbrothers and many other loving relatives and close friends.

A Homegoing service will take place on Friday, August 11, 2023, at 5p.m. at Shady Grove Baptist Church, 2909 Hwy. 203, Alma, GA, with Pastor Edmund Thrift and Pastor Donnie Durrance officiating and tributes from loved ones. Burial will follow in the Shady Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church from 3pm-5pm.

Active pallbearers are Cody Thrift, Matthew Thrift, Josh Thrift, Shawn King, Will Bennett, Mike Thrift, and Scott Murphy.

Honorary pallbearers are former co-workers of the Jones Company/Distribution South, Shady Grove Baptist Church deacons and wives, Kevin and Tena Allen, Keith and Julie Allen, and Kenneth and Robyn Allen.
