Mr. Dewey Leston Smith, age 89, of Blackshear, passed away Wednesday evening (3/18/20) at Harborview Pierce County following an extended illness.
Born February 5, 1931 in Blackshear, he was a son of the late Paul and Lessie Moody Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Pierce County and was a veteran, having served in the US Army. He had worked as the Parts Manager for Waters Ford but was retired as the longtime Parts Manager for Dixon Ford Tractor in Blackshear.
He enjoyed attending area churches, including Southgate Baptist Church, Youmans Chapel Baptist Church, and Pine Grove Baptist Church. He was a regular patron of McDonald’s and Burger King and enjoyed visiting with his friends during meal times.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Barrs Smith; 3 brothers, A.C. Smith, Olen Smith, and Donahue Smith; and a nephew, Wayne Riggins.
Survivors include his sister, Eloise Riggins Johnson (husband Billy) of Blackshear; 1 brother, Paul Monroe Smith of San Antonio, TX; nieces and nephew, Darlene Smith (husband Reggie)of Waycross, Patricia Tyson (husband David) of Blackshear, Charlene Riggins (Mike Purvis) of Blackshear, and Kevin Riggins (wife Jennifer) of Waycross; several great nieces and nephews; and many friends and other relatives.
A graveside funeral service will take place Saturday morning (3/21/20) at 11 AM at Waters Cemetery with Rev. Joe Thigpen officiating.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery one hour prior to the service.
