Mr. James Carl Griffin, Sr., age 88, of Blackshear, passed away Monday afternoon (1/22/24) at his residence following a short illness.
Born March 13, 1935, in Eustis, Florida, he was a son of the late James William “Jim” and Ada Pauline Tillman Griffin. Living most of his life in Pierce County, he quit school at an early age due to the death of his father. He went to work to help support his mother and siblings and was the longtime owner and operator of Carl Griffin Logging Company.
He was an avid Georgia Bulldog and Golden State Warriors fan, enjoyed listening to the Pierce County Bears games on the radio, and loved to garden, especially red potatoes and mustard greens.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annette Henderson Griffin; a son, James Carl “Jay” Griffin, Jr.; 2 siblings and in-laws, Oscar Griffin (Nina) and Patsy Bennett Clark (Archie); and a brother-in-law, Gator Griner.
Survivors include 3 children, Terry Lynn Griffin, Tammy A. Griffin, and Thomas Neal Griffin (wife MaryJane), all of Blackshear; 2 grandchildren, Miranda Annette Griffin and Thomas Blake Minchew (wife Victoria); 2 great grandchildren, Sophia Minchew and Buxton Minchew; 4 siblings, Colleen Griffin, Eleanor Griner, and Pat Griffin, all of Blackshear, and Betty Ammons (husband Danny) of Jesup; special companion, Betty Hood of Alma; special friend, Timmy Hood of Alma; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A funeral service will take place Saturday morning (1/27/24) at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Hart Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Blackshear City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday one hour prior to the service.
