James Perry Jones Obituary

Mr. James Perry Jones, age 88, of Hoboken, passed away early Sunday morning (2/4/24) at his residence following an extended illness.

Born May 30, 1935, in Hoboken, Georgia, he was a son of the late Edward Benjamin “E.B.” Jones Sr. and Georgia Lee Jones. A 1953 graduate of Hoboken High School, he had played basketball, baseball, and ran track. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956 as a teletype operator at Camp Zama in Japan; and with the Army Reserves from 1956 to 1962. He was a 1960 graduate of South Georgia Technical and Vocational School in Americus and worked as a diesel mechanic in Savannah, South Carolina, and Leesburg before returning to Hoboken in 1969. He had worked as a diesel mechanic for Thom’s Transport and retired from D&M International in Blackshear.

Through the years, he enjoyed motorcycles and car races at Waycross Motor Speedway, where he was a fan of the Blackshear Bandit, Mike Carter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Phillip Cross; 2 sisters, Louise Jones Justice and Carol Jones Chancey, and his brothers, Edward Benjamin “Eddy” Jones Jr. and Sammy Jones.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marjorie Louise “Margie” Lee Jones, Hoboken; 1 daughter, Sherry Cross, Brunswick, 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Edward “Eddy” and Patti Jones, Screven and Raymond and Darlene Jones, Hoboken; six grandchildren, LaTasha Cross, Shanae Cross, Devin Jones (Gena), Nikki Strickland (Shaun), Scott Jones (Mandi) and Tyler Jones (Kelsey); 11 great-grandchildren, Devin “Little Dev” Jones II, Harlie Jones, Dayla Jones, Kaleb Strickland, Brody Strickland, Cuyler Strickland, Raylee Strickland, Konner Jones, Ethan “Bob” Jones, Maci-jay Jones and Harper Jones; four sisters, Nancy J. Thrift, Yulee, FL, Georgia Lee Todd (Linton), Waycross, Susie Jones Deal, Bristol and Margaret Jones Roberts (Billy), Hoboken; a sister-in-law, Patricia “Tricia” Tanner, Alma; a brother-in-law, Billy Lee, Alma; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A memorial service will take place Saturday morning (2/10/24) at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Hart Funeral Home.
