Mr. Vilos L. “Jerry” Owens, Jr., age 69, of Blackshear, passed away Saturday afternoon (1/30/21) at the Bacon County Hospital following an extended illness.
Born October 19, 1951 in Jacksonville, Florida, he was a son of the late Jasper Vilos and Eldrie Altman Owens. He lived all of his life in Pierce County and was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era. He was a longtime manager and salesman at Hoboken Building Supply but was working as a salesman at Farmers and Builders Ace Hardware in Blackshear for the past few years. He was a member of Hacklebarney Baptist Church where he played the guitar and sang with the choir.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Doris Henry Owens of Blackshear; 3 children, Bryan Owens (wife Kristy) of Alma, Leslie Owens (wife Carolyn) of Patterson, and Amy Dial (husband Charles, Jr.) of Homerville; 5 grandchildren, Sarah and Chloe Owens, both of Alma, Taylor and Hunter Owens, both of Patterson, and Madison Dial of Homerville; 8 sisters: Carolyn Durrence of Blackshear, Peggy Smith of Aiken, S.C., Sandra Strickland of Blackshear, Elaine Parshal of Blackshear, Genice Pace (husband Bill) of Greenville, S.C., Sarah Taylor (husband Robbie) of Offerman, Mary Vela of Blackshear, and Marie Davis of Charlotte, N.C.; 2 brothers:, Johnny Owens (wife Teresa) of Homeland, GA, and Joseph Owens of Blackshear; uncles: Maxie Owens (wife Jenny) and Waldo Batten, both of Blackshear; an aunt, Linda Owens of Groveland, FL; a special friend, Bob Fleming of Alabama; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A funeral service will take place on Tuesday (2/2/21) at 3 p.m. at Hacklebarney Baptist Church with Rev. Monroe Gill and Rev. Greg Carter officiating. Burial will follow in the Enon Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Due to Covid-19, the CDC guidelines will be followed with social distancing and the use of masks required for the service.
