Jonathan Grant Obituary

Jonathan Grant, known by all as “Papa Joe”, age 81, of Patterson, received his calling from heaven on Thursday, October 8, 2020.

Jonathan Grant was born on March 24, 1939 to the late Deacon Peter Thomas Grant and Ruth Ashley Grant. His mother died while Jonathan was a young boy. He was then raised by his step mother, Rozelia Myers Grant.

Jonathan was taught the way of the Lord by his parents and church family at Pillar Ground and Truth Holiness Church, Patterson, GA.

Jonathan and Hester Booth, were childhood sweethearts. On September 15, 1962, they were joined in holy matrimony. They were happily married for 54 years. To their union, eight children were added. Jonathan moved his family to Philadelphia, PA in the year of 1970. While residing in PA, he was employed by Sandy Mac Meat Company located in New Jersey. After careful consideration, Jonathan and Hester decided to return home to Patterson, GA in 1990 with their children. He was then employed by the City of Patterson as a laborer, until he retired in 2016.

Papa Joe was a person that cared deeply for all that he encountered, especially his family and in laws.

Jonathan was preceded in death by his loving wife, Hester Lee Booth Grant; his parents, Deacon Peter Grant, Ruth Grant and Rozelia Grant; 1 brother, Andrew Jackson Grant; 1 granddaughter, Kallee Palmer; and 2 great grandchildren, Ahmad Pearson and Demarian Palmer.

His legacy will forever live on through those who will cherish his memories: 4 daughters, Brenda (Ephraim) Palmer of Blackshear, GA, Yvette Frazier of Brunswick, GA, Venturine (Charles) Daniels of Lake Stevens, WA, and Thelma Mason of Atlanta, GA; 4 sons, Keith Frazier, Patterson, GA, Kevin (Melody) Frazier of Fayetteville, NC, Malcolm (Danica) Deshields of Jacksonville, FL, and Gary McWhorter of Philadelphia, PA; 13 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; 2 sisters and a brother-in-law, Julia Hicks of Punta Gorda, FL and Connie (Rev. Herman) Lincoln of Patterson, GA; 3 brothers and a sister-in-law, Peter Thomas Grant of Patterson, GA, Archie Grant of Mechanicsville, VA, and Ulysses (Geraldine) Grant of Rochester, NY; 1 aunt, Naomi Whitehead of Greenville, Pennsylvania; 3 sisters-in-law: Patricia Wilson, Estella Ashley, Rosa Ann Booth, all of Patterson; a brother-in-law, Andrew J. Booth of Patterson, GA; 1 Godchild, Rayn Rhem of Waycross, GA; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family is currently receiving friends at the home of Mr. Jonathan Grant, 3266 Lucas Street, Patterson, Georgia 31557.

A visitation for Mr. Grant will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, October 16, at the funeral home, 210 Johnson Street, Blackshear.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at 11 a.m. at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, Ridge Cemetery, 5610 Washington Lane, Patterson, GA.

The cortege will assemble at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday at 3266 Lucas Street, Patterson.
