Mr. Leon Edward Durrance, age 73, of Blackshear, passed away Thursday morning (2/6/20) at his residence following an extended illness.
Born August 3, 1946 in Blackshear, GA, he was a son of the late Troy and Bessie Crews Durrance. He served in the United States Air Force in the Vietnam War as an aircraft mechanic from 1965-1969. He retired from The Electric Materials Company in Northeast, PA.
While living in Westfield, New York, he was a member of the American Legion, the Moose Lodge, and the VFW Post 6764 in which he served as the Commander for an extended period of time. He moved to Lakeland, Florida and was a member of the local American Legion and VFW. He and his wife also enjoyed a summer home in Summersville, West Virginia where he was active with the local American Legion participating in the Funeral Honor Guard.
He will be remembered as a true American patriot, and for his sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh with his jokes and hilarious manner of story-telling. He was also a free verse poet, writing about experiences and situations he felt strongly about.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Faye Roberson and Betty Herrin; and 4 brothers, T.J. Durrance, Tommy Durrance, Ray Durrance, and Freddie Durrance.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Mary Ann Dolliver Durrance of Blackshear; son, Troy Durrance (wife Ann Marie) of Lancester, NY; 3 sisters, Debbie Turner (husband Ronnie) and Mandy Snider (husband Al), both of Blackshear and Bobbie Anderson of Spring, TX; his fur baby, Rocky; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
A memorial service will take place Sunday afternoon (2/9/20) at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Hart Funeral Home.
