Mr. Leslie “Les” Edward Hanly, age 75, of Bristol, passed away Friday evening (3/29/19) at his residence following an extended illness.
Born June 17, 1943 in Valdosta, GA, he was a son of the late Edward Bernard Hanly, Jr. and Launa Lavinia Pindar Hanly. He graduated from Waycross High School in 1961 and had played football at Virginia Tech. He also a college football coach, coaching at Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and at Rice University. He had also been a coach for the Jacksonville Tomcats, a team in the Arena Football League. Following coaching, he became a salesman for Levi Strauss, retiring following a 25 year career. Following retirement, he and his wife moved back to Bristol in 2015. He was a member of the “CB” Claiborne Boys at Virginia Tech and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Raulins Hanly of Bristol; his daughter, Mackensey Hanly of Ashland, VA; brother, Eddy Hanly (wife Arlene) of Jacksonville, FL; sister, Kathy Cooper (husband Scott) of Waycross; sister-in-law, Mary Raulins of Bristol; brother-in-law, John Raulins of Stockbridge, GA; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
Memorialization is by cremation.
