Mrs. Mary Murray Thornton, age 95, of K’ville, Georgia, passed away early Wednesday morning (8/9/2023) at The Appling Nursing and Rehabilitation Pavilion in Baxley following an extended illness.
Born December 12, 1927, in Surrency, she was a daughter of the late James Floyd and Hortie Thomas Murray. She lived most of her life in K’ville and had owned and operated Mary’s Beauty Shop. She was a member of Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church and had served as a deaconess and served as the Cemetery Director for 23 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Thornton; sister, Lula Murray Griffis; and brothers, James Murray, Russell Murray, Leamon Murray, Joe Murray, Vernon Murray, and Johnny Murray.
Survivors include her 2 sons: Jerry M. Thornton (wife Kathleen) and James “Jimmy” Thornton (wife Cheryl), all of K’ville; 7 grandchildren: Heidi Thomas (husband Tim) of Milledgeville, GA, Charissa Fitch (husband Brannon) of St. Simons Island, GA, Amber Watts (husband Josh) of Baxley, GA, Becky Johnson (husband Chris) of Reidsville, GA, Jamie Thornton of Brunswick, Aaron Thornton (wife Bethany) of Guyton, GA, Miranda James (husband Jerry) of Baxley, and Eric Mizel (wife Jessica) of Alma; 17 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren, a sister-in-law: Eva Mae Murray of Baxley, GA; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A funeral service will take place Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Hart Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Big Creek Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday one hour prior to the service.
