Mr. Tommy Marshall Thornton, age 71, of Blackshear, passed away Wednesday morning (10/13/21) at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House following a short battle with cancer.
Born March 17, 1950 in Waycross, he was a son of the late Marshall Cecil and Evelyn McQuaig Thornton. He lived all of his life in Pierce County and was the Salutatorian of the Blackshear High School Class of 1968. He was a self-employed third generation farmer with Thornton-N-Thornton (TNT) Farms, LLC and attended Rehobeth Baptist Church.
Most days you could find him at a local restaurant eating breakfast or lunch, probably telling a story of some kind. If he wasn’t eating out, he was on his farm working—praying for rain or praying for the rain to stop. If you knew him, you can probably quote something candid that he has said. He loved to tell stories and make people laugh.
His pride and joy were his grandbabies and loved nothing more than to spend time with them. He cheered on the Georgia Bulldogs every Saturday for many years and now has the best seat in the house. GO DAWGS!!!
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Norma Jean Henderson.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Cheryl Smith Thornton of Blackshear; 3 children, Stephanie Lott (husband Matt) of Newnan, GA, Jet Thornton (fiancé Amanda Landon) of Blackshear, Kalli Barber (husband Justin) of Patterson; 6 grandchildren, Sarah Beth Lott, Anna Leigh Lott, Ret Thornton, Hux Thornton, Mason Barber, and Smith Barber; a brother-in-law, Cleve Henderson (wife Sandra) of Blackshear; 2 nieces, Paige King (husband Michael) of Blackshear and Misty Harris (husband Stan) of Bristol; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A funeral service will take place Friday morning (10/15/21) at 11 a.m. at Rehobeth Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Rehobeth Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church on Friday one hour prior to the service.
