Mr. Windell Darcy Smith, age 82, of Mershon, passed away Thursday morning (9/16/21) at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House following an extended illness.
Born January 11, 1939 in Blackshear, he was a son of the late Dewey Everette and Leola Wade Smith. He graduated from Bacon County High School and had served in the U.S. Air Force before a family hardship caused his return home. He lived most of his life in Pierce County and had worked for Scapa Dryers, Inc in Waycross and for UPS in Patterson before owning and operating Smith Service Station in Blackshear for many years. Following retirement, he worked for Farmers and Builders.
A member of Mershon Baptist Church, he had served as a deacon for 39 years, attended the Senior Adult Sunday School Class, served as the Choir Director for several years, had taught the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class, and was faithful to always serve where needed.
He was the worker behind the scenes to assist his wife with their hobbies. Whether it was the Gourd Heads that were used to decorate the sidewalks of Blackshear for many fall days, making pecan and peanut brittle, or assisting to oversee Ramah Cemetery, he was always alongside. He also furnished bee traps he built that were sold for years at Farmers and Builders. He enjoyed hunting quail and deer, gardening, feeding and watching birds, was an avid reader, loved kids, and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His grandchildren were the apples of his eye.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Charlotte Bennett Smith; a granddaughter, Beth Ann Raulerson; a brother, Cecil Smith; and a brother-in-law, Darrell Tomlinson.
Survivors include his 2 children, Kathy Paul (husband David) of Mershon and Kenny Smith (wife Melanie) of Greensboro, NC; 4 grandchildren, Jeb Raulerson of Blackshear, Peyton Smith (wife Brooke) of Zebulon, NC, Kennedy Smith of Greensboro, NC, and Logan Paul of Marietta; 2 great grandchildren, Rhett Raulerson and Holden Smith; 3 sisters, Emily Chancey (husband Roger) of Nahunta, Marilyn Tomlinson of Alma, and Wanda Wheeler (husband Johnny) of Alma; a brother, Ronnie Smith of Alma; his caretaker, Susan Snead of Blackshear; a host of honorary grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral service will take place Saturday evening (9/18/21) at Mershon Baptist Church at 5 p.m. with Rev. Mitch Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Ramah Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 4 p.m.
