Mr. William Lawrence “Billy” Sapp, age 85, of Screven , passed away late Monday afternoon (10/14/19) at his residence under the loving care of his family and Hospice of South Georgia, Inc.

A lifelong resident of Wayne County, he was born October 15, 1933 to the late Willie Frances and Lottie Tyre Sapp.  He spent his early years enjoying camping, spending time with family and friends, and traveling to the mountains. He retired in 1985 from Rayonier after more than 30 years of employment.

He was a chapter farmer and enjoyed growing vegetables and cane for yearly cane grinding events in the county.  He continued to grow and work his garden, passing down all his knowledge of the land to his sons until his health failed him. His favorite time spent with his sons was alongside them in his garden picking up “taters” or picking peas.

He was well known for his ability to fix just about anything. He enjoyed helping others to fix anything from refrigerators to washers and dryers to roofs. He always found time to check on the elderly and widows, ensuring any unkempt maintenance was done and food from his garden was offered.

He was a devoted, loving husband, father, and grandfather and was faithful, devoted friend to all. He attended Ritch Baptist Church as able.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Sapp, and a sister, Virginia Sapp Ogden.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Norma Jean Sapp of Screven;  a daughter, Suzanne Corbitt (husband Hank) of Screven; 3 sons, Clifton Sapp and Kenny Sapp (wife Lynn), both of Screven and Robbie Carter (wife Marsha) of Hazlehurst; 11 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; a sister, Myrtle Sapp Deal of Aiken, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

A funeral service will take place Wednesday morning (10/16/19) at 11 a.m. at Ritch Baptist Church with Pastor I.B. Boyette and Mrs. Sylvia Hollis officiating.  Friends of the family will be singing. Active pallbearers will be Jordan Herrin, Trevor Brewton, Franklin Denison, Wayne Carter, and Jim Cornelius.  Burial will follow in the Ritch Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made be sent to Ritch Baptist Church, 737 Ritch Church Road, Screven, GA 31560.

Suzanne and family,
Mr. Billy held a special place in my Grandaddy's heart and they had some good times working together at the mill and riding back and to together. Grandaddy could not tell a story about Mr. Billy without laughing.

You hold a special place in my heart and I pray you cherish your memories and these last peaceful days you were able to spend with your Daddy.
