Mr. Arthur Marion Leadingham, Sr., age 85, of Blackshear, died Sunday afternoon (3/20/14) at his residence following an extended illness.

Born August 2, 1928 in Springville, Kentucky, he was a son of the late James F. and Bessie Horne Leadingham. As a teenager, he went to work with Norfolk-Southern Railway in Sciotoville, Ohio before enlisting in the Army on August 20, 1948. He served in the Korean War where he was a member of the 27th Infantry Regiment, nicknamed the Wolfhounds, was wounded on July 27th, 1950, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He then went back to work for Norfolk-Southern Railway before enlisting in the US Navy on July 29,1958. He was stationed in Norfolk, VA, served one tour in Hong Kong, and rose to the rank of Master Chief Store Keeper (SKCM E-9).  He retired on September 12, 1983. During his military career, he was awarded two National Defense Service Medals, Korean Service Medal with Silver Star, United Nations Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal with Japan Clasp, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation with 3 Bronze Stars, and five Good Conduct Awards.   After retirement, he worked for ten years with the Civil Service before moving to Blackshear.

He enjoyed history, especially anything about all of the Wars, was a Civil War enthusiast, and enjoyed collecting Lincoln Cars. He also enjoyed working in his yard and growing watermelons, and was a member of the Democratic Party.

He was a Baptist by faith, but watched and financially supported Shepherd’s Chapel in Arkansas.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Francis Yamrick Leadingham, and 2 brothers, Robert Leadingham and Herbert Leadingham.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Barbara Ann Leadingham-Sahami of Norfolk, VA, Alice Strickland of Blackshear, and Valerie Ordway (husband Frank) of Sharon, MA; 1 son, Arthur Leadingham, Jr. (wife Michelle) of Montgomery, AL; 10 grandchildren, Mary Katherine Hensley (husband Brad) and Christopher Sahami, both of Chesapeake, VA, Steven Strickland (wife Renee) and Robbie Strickland (wife Connie), both of Blackshear, Jenna Ruth Ordway, Mollie Ordway, and Aletheia Ordway, all of Sharon, MA, Rebecca Hunter (husband Wilson) of Mountain Brook, AL, Laura Leadingham of Marin County, CA, and Lili Leadingham of Montgomery, AL; 11 great grandchildren; 9 great great grandchildren; 1 sister: Delores Leadingham Craycraft of Texas; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A graveside funeral service will take place Thursday morning at 10 AM at Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
